[vc_row padding_top=”0%”][vc_column][wpc_custom_heading heading=”How often should our equipment be PAT Tested?” colored_line=”yes” size=”medium”][vc_column_text]AT EICR in Edinburgh, we carry out PAT testing, which stands for portable appliance testing. Our aim is to keep you, your tenants or your workplace safe.

The frequency of PAT testing in Edinburgh varies with the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. For example, a power tool, which is handheld and used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a desk lamp in a hotel bedroom. For more detailed information please check out the www.HSE.gov.uk website. We at EICR Edinburgh carry out PAT testing on all types of equipment.

Any item deemed not safe to use will have a failed label applied and our Approved Electrician will advise our client on-site. The Technician will also detail on the Job Sheet the failed item and will ask the client to sign their initials as knowledge of the failed item. It is then the client’s responsibility to either repair the item or to have it taken off-site to ensure the item is no longer used. If advised, we can cut the wire at the plug end or appliance end to ensure it is not used. If required, we can repair small faults such as incorrectly rated fuses.

[/vc_column_text][wpc_custom_heading heading=”Pat testing takes into consideration many factors such as:” colored_line=”yes” size=”medium”][vc_column_text el_class=”eicrbullet”]

  • Free from cracks and damage or sign of overheating/thermal damage.
  • Open plug top, check correctly wired, terminals tight & correct fuse in place – we can replace the fuse for you or replace plug tops.
  • Free from cuts, fraying, damage or exposed copper.
  • Not in a location where it could be damaged. For example: Under a carpet that could cause a trip hazard, squeezed tightly between desks or jammed in a floor box.
  • No joints or connections that may render it unsuitable for use, such as taped joints, a favourite for DIY dads!
  • Only one flex connected into one plug. We found that customers sometimes connect 2 cables into plugs.
  • Long leads, such as an extension reel or Vacuum cleaner lead, will be inspected throughout its length as “heat spots” can occur from not fully extending the cable during use.
  • No indiscriminate use of extension leads. This can result in overload, fire hazards and trip hazards.
  • Check for any hazard from water through spillages or leaks.
  • Chargers should not be left plugged into a socket when not in use.
  • Free from chemical or corrosion damage to the outer casing which could result in exposed live parts.
  • No missing buttons/switches or open access to any terminals.
  • Flexible cable secure in its anchorage.
  • The cable grip should be checked by firmly pulling and twisting the cable. No movement should be apparent.
  • Plug top pins not bent or burnt.
